Dennis Cochrane
Minister-at-Large Wycliffe Bible Translators
Dennis Cochrane and his wife, Nancy, served as linguists
and Bible translators among the Duna people in the highlands of Papua
New Guinea. Dennis is a graduate of Columbia International University
and Wheaton Graduate School of Theology. His linguistics studies were
done at the University of North Dakota.
Before beginning Bible translation work the Cochranes learned
the language of the Duna people. They then created an alphabet for this
previously unwritten language, did grammar analysis and compiled a Duna-English
dictionary. After they prepared literacy materials many of the Duna people
learned to read and write in their own language. Finally it was Dennis'
joy to give the Dunas the first portions of God's Word translated into
their language. A church was born as several thousand of these people
came to know Christ. Today dozens of congregations meet regularly in thatch-roofed
chapels to worship the Lord and study His Word in their language. Nearly
three thousand of the world's language groups still cannot understand
God's Word because it doesn't exist in a language they can understand.
The goal of Wycliffe Bible Translators is to see Bible translation work
initiated by the year 2025 in each of these Bibleless languages. To that
end Dennis now serves in mobilization, sharing on college campuses and
in church mission conferences the challenge of world missions and Bible
translation.
Dennis has a daughter who is a Bible translator in Central
Asia and a son who serves as Ministries Coordinator for a missions-minded
church. Nancy is now with the Lord and Dennis makes his home in Columbia,
South Carolina near his son's family.
