Troubleshooting

Internet Explorer & Nescape 4.xx | Mozilla | Netscape 6 & 7

General

Q: Why won't the pop-up window open when I click on one of the listen links?

A: There are two possible answers to this question.

  1. You are using a second or third-generation browser, such as Netscape Navigator 2.0, 3.0 or Internet Explorer 3.0.
Solution: Upgrade your browser by downloading a free one from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ (Microsoft Internet Explorer), http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/default.jsp (Netscape Navigator) or http://mozilla.org/releases/ (Mozilla).

  2. You have pop-up blocking software installed on your computer.
Solution: Turn off the pop-up blocking software while surfing this website, or declare it a "trusted" website, depending on your software

Q: I have Real Player installed, so why can't I listen to the Real Audio files?

A: You must be running at least Real Player 10 to be able to listen to the Real Audio files. You can download the player for free from Real.com. If your computer can't handle Real Player 10, then download the MP3 files and listen to them from your hard drive.

Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator 4.xx

Q: Why does the window blank out and load a plug-in to play an MP3 when I click the link to download the file?

A: Due to the limitations of the browser architecture, Internet Explorer will attempt to open the MP3 file and play it using whatever plug-in you have installed on your machine. In order to bypass this you can do the following:

Windows users: Right-click the link and select "Save Target As..." to save the mp3 file to your hard drive.

Mac users: Shift-click the link to save the mp3 file to your hard drive.

Mozilla

Q: Why does the embedded plug-in only the first few seconds of the MP3 and then stop?

A: This is a limitation of the interface between QuickTime and Mozilla. Please download the MP3 by doing the following:

Windows users: Right-click the link and select "Save Target As..." to save the mp3 file to your hard drive.

Mac users: Shift-click the link to save the mp3 file to your hard drive.

Netscape Navigator 6 and 7

Q: Why can’t I listen to MP3s on-line when I use Netscape Navigator 6 or 7?

A: The alterations in the architecture of Netscape 6 and its follow-up 7 make it impossible for QuickTime to associate with MP3 files. This is a limitation that we were unable to overcome. If you have any information on how to get past this limitation and force Netscape 6 and 7 to play embedded MP3s, please write hawke-ai@wolfhawke.com with a link or complete description of what to do. We’re always open to suggestions.

Q: Why does Netscape Navigator 6 or 7 open a new window when clicking on a link but do nothing?

A: This is a limitation of Netscape 6 and up. The program will nicely download the MP3 to your hard-drive – albeit in your cache subdirectory. To save the file to a place where your MP3 player software can find it, click on "File" in the menu bar and select "Save As..." Pick a location and click save to drop the file to where you can access it.

Q: How can I download an MP3 file in Netscape Navigator 6 or 7?

A: There are two possible routes for doing this.

1. Click on the link. A new browser window will open that will download the MP3 file invisibly. When the download is complete (see the table below for approximate download times), click on "File" in the menu bar and select "Save As..." Pick a location and click save to drop the file to where you can access it.

2a. Windows users: Right-click the link and select "Save Target As..." to save the mp3 file to your hard drive.

2b. Mac users: Shift-click the link to save the mp3 file to your hard drive.

We do not recommend using the second option, because the file will not download as cleanly and Netscape may truncate the content.
