A lot of people keep asking me for advice about various technological things and I find I have to repeat myself quite frequently, as various people ask me similar questions over and over again. And so this section contains some of my personal experiences which can be added to the myriad of articles others have written. I realize that much of this is not original, but hopefully someone will benefit from my limited experience some day. At least I’ll have purged it from my system as I’ve written it here.

E-mail is one of those bogeymen, especially for those who desire true security in their communications. The problem is that 90% of users don't use any sort of protection on their e-mails. It's — to use the old example — as if we were sending each other messages using postcards rather than letters sealed in an envelope. Backing up your computer system regularly is one of the best ways of keeping your system secure. It may not protect against data theft, but it will definitely protect against data loss. Nowadays there are so many options for backing up that we could fill an entire article with the plusses and minuses of these programs.
