Scars

J.M. Diener

October 2000

For my birthday I was given a children’s book called Tales of the Kingdom. One of the main characters is a boy called Hero who has a scar on his face that he covers with one hand. At one point he must face his scarring — his worst enemy — in order to complete a task set for him.

Just recently I was also asked, “What is your scar?” At first I thought I knew, but then after looking a second time, I was uncertain. What is my scar, my worst enemy, anyway? I still haven’t discovered what it is, but I have realized that each person must face up to his or her scars and expose them to be really useful for the Lord. He uses our scars to heal others, just as “by His stripes healed are we” (Isa. 53:5).
