Synopsis

Spanning almost five hundred years, the Ottoman Empire controlled much of the middle east from the 1400s to the early 20th century until it collapsed under its own weight. Kinross documents the rise and fall of this empire of conquerors, drawing out their strengths and weaknesses.

Evaluation

A fascinating book, that neither flatters nor debases the mighty Turkish civilization who wielded such influence over the Middle East during its existence. It is a cautionary tale, as well as a window to understanding why the Turks are the way they are today. This is a must-read for anyone who has any interest in the Middle East, especially those who are interested in the Turks.
