Author’s Note

This story is based on George Orwell’s epic novel 1984. There was one thing about it that really bothered me and that was the sheer hopelessness of the story. I understand that that is what Orwell intended, but what about Jesus Christ? He has held out hope and love and most importantly salvation for almost 2000 years. If Oceania had really come to pass, there would have been no way that the Party could snuff out the burning flame, and because they couldn’t do that, the regime that thrived towards power would fall apart. This would be my vision for this world of hopelessness: One man would come to know the Truth, be set free by it, and through the martyrdom of one man the nation would be saved. That is what 1989 is about, the story of the one man, Rich Eldrich, who gave up his life to follow his new Lord. Through his faith his wife is saved and through both of their faiths the nation was saved.
